New Year, Same Spirit

With the new year upon us, many of us have made a resolution to seek health. It’s funny, because it seems easier to know what health is by knowing what unhealth is. We know we need to exercise more, eat better, practice better sleep hygiene, incorporate self-care,  but how do we know when we have arrived at health? Is there a destination?

How would you describe a healthy person? Someone at peace with themselves, the world, and maybe God? Someone who can find joy or gratitude in their everyday? Someone who loves well and knows they are loved? They can practice patience, kindness, self-control… wait a minute… this is starting to sound familiar…

‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. ‘
— Galatians 5:22-23

The elements of life that mean the most are found in our relationship with God. While practicing physical health is good for our emotions and cognitive processing (of which I am a HUGE proponent!), our deepest desires for an abundant life are found in applying the lens of the Spirit on our lives. When we seek the Lord, He affirms His love for us. He gives us a new understanding of people and situations which grants us peace and patience. When our cups overflow with love, it is a lot easier to practice kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and overall self-control. If you are looking to have a new lease on life this year, I encourage you to prioritize your relationship with God.

'But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. '

Matthew 6:33
